You have hurt your knees, or maybe your knees just hurt! Either way, living with chronic knee pain can be frustrating and discouraging, particularly when it affects your quality of life.
Broadly speaking there are three types of knee injuries:
- Acute Knee Injury, such as a torn ACL or meniscal tear.
- Chronic Joint Pain, often resulting in arthritis or joint deterioration.
- Tissue Injury around the knee, which manifests itself in localized pain absent of joint injury.
Regardless of which of the three are challenging a person, in the majority of the cases these injuries are not sudden. In other words the injury is often the result of activities we did or did not do over a long period of time, which eventually manifested itself in “knee pain” or even acute injury.
The purpose of the “Building Better Knees” training program is to coach the activities that promote knee health. While these activities can be done post-surgery and/or post-rehabilitation, ideally we would perform these activities as “surgery prevention”.
This training program is NOT designed to take the place of physical therapy. I am not a PT, and I don’t play one on TV. We are privileged to have relationships with many fine physical therapists with whom we share clients. The question is “What Do I Do Now?”. There is a big difference in being classified and discharged from PT as “clinically normal” and reaching optimal levels of long term health and performance.
Ultimately the goal is to live our lives pain free. For some this may seem like a pipe dream, however we have seen amazing outcomes with those who are dedicated to doing the daily work necessary to achieve healthy knees. Healthy soft tissue, bones and joints, and optimal mobility in the knee joint as well as the joints above and below (hips/ankles) are all key components to building better knees. All of these components are addressed in the “Building Better Knees” training.
