I understand that using the word “Fat” is not very politically correct in this hyper-sensitive day and age we live in. This may come as a shock to you – I don’t care. Well actually that’s not true – it’s because I DO care that I call it like I see it.
I shared a story in one of our classes recently about my doctor, well actually the guy who used to be my doctor. I weighed about 250 when I went to see him for my physical one year. I was trying to head him off at the pass and told him “I know I need to lose a few pounds”, actually a very significant understatement. He said something like “Well most of us do, you are not really that bad”. I have thought about that statement often over the years, and it still stuns me. I realize now that this man also was very overweight, learned later that he smoked, and in fact was dead of heart disease in his fifties. He had his own issues that he wasn’t dealing with, and maybe that was being reflected in the advice he was giving his patients. The other thing that occurs to me is that physicians are being sued for hurting people’s feelings, for calling them “Fat”. Now while I understand sensitivety may be called for, I also know that we have allowed that sensitivety to translate into a culture that is very rapidly killing itself through it’s own behaviour.
I WAS fat – no two ways about it. To call it anything else is denial, and it was killing me, just like it’s killing a very large part of our population, some quicker than others. If you are waiting for someone to solve the obesity problem let me clue you in – it’s starts with me, and it starts with you.
Ok, enough ranting!
Did you see the story on Good Morning America about the trainer who gained 90 pounds so he could empathize with his clients? While I understand his motives (publicity being pretty high on the list) I think he got more than he bargained for.
I have to post the link because GMA won’t let us embed it, but I want you to watch the video and tell me what you think in the comment section below.
Here’s a couple things to look for:
He says he got addicted to fast food – real quick
His posture from the extra weight – ouch
and from a training standpoint, I would encorauge him to get off the machines and get that body moving…
Check it out and let me know what you think.

Make It Happen!
Dean

I just read an article about the fact that excessive salt consumption gives you a euphoric feeling for a short time… no wonder fast food is so addictive! There are much healthier ways to feel good! And they last alot longer than that tub o' fries! I have to say, I don't think this was the wisest move he could have made… Dean, aren't you thankful you can already empathize!
I am thankful – I wouldn't do it again on purpose for anything…
Destructive behavior. it is so much easier to tell people that I am fat because …?….?….?. I am fat because I did not eat healthy, I did not move the mass, I did not think that I was worth the effort.
FAT is FAT, no matter how you dress it up.
There is the inmate who comes to sick call with neck pain, says to me "my neck hurts" ok you went to PT and she told you…..what? "she gave me some exercises" did you do them "no they make my neck hurt" is that what caused your neck to hurt in the first place? "no" then do the exercises @ least for 30days then if no improvement come back. "I am in pain" I told him look I was in pain too about a year ago could hardly walk and I knew enough that if I DIDN'T MOVE I would be WHEEL CHAIR BOUND!! NO WAY NO HOW WAS THAT GONNA HAPPEN TO ME. If you want to improve then you must be willing to endure what you have found uncomfortable in the first place…PAIN. start out slowly move it on up daily, one day you'll find that the pain is gone "Praise the Lord" He swore @ me. only goes to show some of us want to be unhealthy and then blame others for it.
By the way I am so happy about the 4pm class, just speaking to an officier @ work who said if they has a 1600 class I would go but I don't want to go back home in Webster then go to bootcamp @ 1800. WAY TO GO DEAN..yeah..MAKE IT HAPPEN…yeah yeah yeah..Fran
We need to follow his progress! I for one want to see how long it takes him to lose it all, twice/three times as long as it was to put the weight on I'm sure. Then obviously with his age factoring in, hope he's prepared because he's not gonna look like the little hottie pic. Why would someone mindfully do that to his body??eek… I can't post this… to close to the psyche
Very interesting segment….. Although I have found that junk food often comes disguised as healthy food and too many times people don't take the time to LEARN. For example… it drives me nuts that people think giving your kid 'juice' is healthy!!!! It's got as much sugar as soda! Now I'm not talking about juice from your juicer that you have just extracted from a piece of fruit. I mean that nasty, pasteurized, vitamins added (cause they cooked all the REAL vitamins out) juice that claims….'No Sugar Added!'. Ugh. Induces that mental hand slap to the forehead!
And as far as 'getting off the machines'? He might actually not use machines that much.. No way is GMA going to film that, 1) from a Director of Photography standpoint it's BORING and 2) it would imply that you don't need to spend money on gym membership. and who exactly do you think paid for the following commercial?
I don't know Robin – he had his client on the hamster wheel too…
